Thank god for RSS

I'm so glad that RSS/Atom syndication has become virtually ubiquitous. It's so common that when I run into a project or forum I want to follow that doesn't support syndication it's surprising and annoying. A lot of old web forum/mailing list software only supports notifications by email AFTER you sign up and give them a password, etc... This kind of thing is usable but tedious because gmail's interface makes it harder to segregate mailing lists by label than Google Reader, which separates feeds automatically. If a mailing list supports RSS and email I always go with RSS. And obviously signing up is by itself a huge pain.

Then again, I'm sure some hardcore usenet fans would argue gmail just sucks.

I suppose the only "bad" thing about syndication is that it almost necessitates using a content delivery platform like Blogger or Wordpress if you don't want to annoy people who want to keep up with your content. Some people see that as evil and restrictive, but I guess I choose to fight my battles elsewhere.
